The Stewart Vincent Wolfe Memorial Playground is located in the Yuma West Wetlands Regional park, a one-of-a-kind playground based upon ideas from over 5,000 local school children. Construction of the playground was accomplished entirely by volunteers, young and old, working side by side, in just a few days time - similar to an old-fashioned barn-raising. Over 8,000 community members worked at the Playground "Build" February 8-12 and 15-19. Click on map to enlarge.
Plank Road - **Photos on chefyuma.org and chefyuma.com require permission before use.Plank Road - at the Sand Dunes. Located in the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, off Grays Well Road, is a small
surviving remnant of the unique "floating" wooden road. The Plank Road was
constructed across the dunes in 1916. Used for ten years, it was replaced by a more
reliable paved highway in 1926. A plank road brochure can be obtained at the site.

Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area -
This 40-mile-long dune system is one of the largest in the United States. Formed by windblown beach sands of ancient Lake Cahuilla, some crests reach heights of over 300 feet. These expansive dune formations offer picturesque scenery, opportunities for solitude, a chance to view rare plants and animals, and a playground for OHVs. From the Grays Well road exit on Interstate 8, travelers can access; Buttercup Campground, Midway Campground, and the Plank Road.

Betty's Kitchen - Located at the south end of Mittry Lake, this site is named after a cafe which stood on
the shore of the lake during the 1930s. Although the area was wiped out by flooding in 1983, the site now provides a scenic 1/2 mile interpretive trail which describes the natural and human history of the Colorado River Corridor. Handicapped accessible picnic tables, shade ramadas, fire grills, rest rooms, and a fishing pier make Betty's Kitchen a popular day use area.
Mittry Lake - Located north of Yuma, Mittry Lake is a popular site known for its wildlife viewing, camping, fishing, and hunting. Camping is limited to ten nights per calendar year, per
party. Amenities include ten fishing piers, one of which is handicapped accessible, restrooms, and two boat ramps.

Roxaboxen - is located on the corner of 8th Street and 2nd Avenue in Yuma, Arizona. This unique Park memorializes the beloved and internationally known children's story entitled "Roxaboxen" by author Alice McLerran (now published in 7 languages). This true story is based on the adventures of the author's mother and fellow Roxaboxenites as they grew up in Yuma in the early part of the last century. These children created the make-believe town of "Roxaboxen" from rocks, boxes, and lots of imagination. Even today, you can find neighborhood children making little rock and box houses with imagination as their only mortar. The Park has no grass, no swings, but remains much like it was, reflecting the time period of the story. Very simple benches are installed at the park.
